Don’t Make This Recall Training Mistake!
I see it all the time…
The #1 mistake I find people make when they have trained their dog’s recall is that they only recall them when it is absolutely essential from there on in.
Training a reliable recall is worth its weight in gold. Keeping it reliable is trickier.
If we only ever try to recall our dogs when they really want to do/see something else (and that something is very exciting for them), it's highly likely that they'll start to ignore you over time. You become that nag who always stops the fun!
To ensure your dog reliably responds to their recall for life, no matter what, practice it here and there when no distractions are around. Even when it's trained. Even when you've trained it around distractions. When it's easy for them. When you're not always stopping the fun.
Don't miss a trick in keeping their skills topped up outside of times when a recall is absolutely essential. The bit that's missing for a lot of dogs is not in the training of recall, but in the maintaining of its reliability.
